When do mosquitoes disappear?

When do mosquitoes disappear?

Are you trying to avoid mosquitoes when you travel? Unfortunately, there aren’t many places you can go where you are guaranteed not to run into these pests, but what you can do if you’re willing is follow the temperature.

Mosquitoes are cold-blooded insects, which means that their body temperature is usually the same as their environment since they don’t have the ability to regulate their internal temperatures. Therefore, they shut down when temperatures in their environment drop below 10 degrees - so mid-October to early November is when you’ll likely notice lower levels of mosquito activity in many parts of the world.

Of course, no season is the same, and so mosquitoes may be present longer or for less time, depending on how soon the temperatures fall in a given winter and how fast they warm up during the spring. The first frost is usually the best time to signal the end of the mosquito season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of them. Some mosquitos will hibernate and re-emerge during warmer periods, only to return back to their hiding places when the temperature drops down again.

If you live in an area populated by mosquitos, and you are trying to help to control the mosquito populations around your property, there are a few things that you can do to minimise their presence. Firstly, make sure you regularly drain or get rid of any standing water. Then, you can also trim grass and vegetation to give them fewer places to hide in.

However, if you’re trying to avoid them when you’re travelling, unless you’re a fan of a skiing holiday, your mosquito repellent is the best friend that you will have.
