Minimising bug risks when backpacking

When backpacking in a foreign country, there are many safety concerns to be aware of and minimise responsibly. Often, backpackers are prepared with lockable bags and money pouches, equipped with the knowledge to travel in pairs and be mindful of their belongings, and they know to take trails well-travelled to avoid getting lost...

However, one risk that’s so often forgotten is the risk of mosquitos and other biting bugs. With some of the world’s most deadly diseases passed along by these pesky insects, like the Zika and West Nile Virus, it’s essential that backpackers are aware of the risks and mitigate these wherever possible.

Below are our three simple top tips for ensuring that mosquitos are avoided when backpacking in a foreign country:

1. Choose your hiking locations mindfully. The science of mosquitos tells us that they love to breed in areas with large bodies of water - particularly if these are stagnant. Avoid the bugs whenever possible by hiking, resting, and camping in more exposed and better drained areas — where the wind keep the bugs grounded, and where the drier soil offers less breeding opportunities for mosquito larvae.

2. Ensure that you have proper equipment for the conditions, including bug-proof shelters and bug-resistant clothing, such as long sleeves and hats. It might be tempting to take shorts and t-shirts with you, but those are far more likely to make you a mosquito target than if you wear long clothing. In addition, lighter coloured clothing is key, not only to keep you cooler, but because mosquitos are actually more likely to be drawn to darker clothing.

3. Make sure you have your bug repellent. We’d advise that you pick this up before you travel to avoid paying through the nose for this last minute at the airport and that you look for a series of well-reputed products that will fit with your needs and preferences. From creams, wipes, sprays and bands, there are a variety of ways to ensure you’re protected constantly when you’re out on a trail.
